It’s been an amazing run for the final installment of “The Hunger Games” called “Mockingjay 2.” However, the ride will be over next weekend when the new “Star Wars” film hits theaters like a lightsaber hitting Darth Vader.

Next Friday, December 18, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens to fans that are absolutely rabid! I will have a NON-SPOILER review next Thursday, so I’m excited. I didn’t think I would be, but I am.

This weekend’s box office is as follows.

  1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2″
  2. In the Heart of the Sea
  3. The Good Dinosaur
  4. Creed (in a big surprise this week, Stallone was nominated for a Golden Globe)
  5. Krampus
  6. Spectre
  7. The Night Before
  8. The Peanuts Movie
  9. Spotlight (review to follow)
  10. Brooklyn

There is at least one film above that will be in the running for Oscar. “Spotlight” has a lot of buzz as does “Brooklyn,” these are the types of films Oscar loves. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Creed” gets an Oscar nod or two. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjacy 2” could be a possibility also.

This time of year, the smaller and indie studios kick out their best films. Usually films that are Oscar worthy. They open at only a few theaters so they are eligible for Oscar consideration. You should consider seeing films such as:

  • Carol
  • Spotlight
  • Trumbo
  • Big Short
  • The Danish Girl
  • Suffragette
  • Mr. Holmes

There’s a good start for you.

I will have some reviews and some other things to tell you this coming week. Join the site (it’s free and we don’t send out newsletters) and interact with me and my other writers.

About The Author

Always interested in a good indie film, my taste run towards Horror and documentaries. Rom-coms are my least favorite genre, but I will always take a look for the better good of the site. I've reviewed films for seven years and want to do it for about 20 more...we will see.
