“Angel or Devil”
We all love an interesting story of good vs evil. These stories usually come within the genre of horror. The new book by Christopher Saint Booth is entitled “Angel or Devil” and it a set of two stories of possession and exorcism. Unlike your normal everyday horror book, this tome tells two TRUE stories of the earliest possession and exorcism in the United States.
The first is a fascinating account of the first recorded American case of Spirit Possession. It concerns two families, the Roff family whose daughter Mary had died and the Vennum family. Lurancy Vennum was the daughter whose body hosted Mary’s spirit for 100 days. The case is known as “The Watseka Wonder.” This story is prominently presented in the Booth’s documentary “The Possessed”
Winner of Best Paranormal Documentary 2009. The belief in possession by evil spirits plagued the 18th century. Madness and hysteria spread classifying the mentally ill as Being under the control of the Devil. These sad misfits became the victims of bizarre exorcisms or Casting Out Rituals. Banished from society they were locked away inside brutal asylums. Some called them Angels, others called them Devils, they all were branded, The Possessed! Based on the True Story, The Watseka Wonder, America’s first documented possession of 1877. A chilling journal of a 13-year-old girl from the small town of Watseka, IL who became possessed by spirits of the insane dead! A terrifying journey into the world of the supernatural as we witness first hand, True cases of possession as told by the victims themselves. Filmed on location at the actual haunted houses and insane asylums of The Possessed.
The story is from many sources written before, during and after the possession. Every thing reported is from real documents and notes.
The second of the book deals with an exorcism that occurred in 1928.
The Erling, Iowa Exorcism: A legion of demons inhabit a young girl in 1928. Brought to a convent for an exorcism, disturbing and extraordinary events lash out due to the families dark magic that creates a stronger than evil curse. This section is very exact and separated into chapters, each of which is fascinating.
I love this book of the first people to experience these very strange paranormal happenings told by some of these people who experienced them.
Watseka is a very small town in Illinois. These were just normal people living normal lives. They ended up going through an amazing paranormal experience that is told in this book just as it happened.
Both stories are not only entertaining they are very real histories of early paranormal events in the United States.
I recommend this book to students of the real paranormal. The isn’t about raising a demon from an old hospital or prison. This is for real and it’s creepier than any fiction you will watch or read.
The Booth Brothers (Christopher and Philip) have a body of work that is truly amazing. The true stories they bring to life are both interesting and horrific. Stories of children who lived and died in unthinkable conditions in asylums. I would recommend the above mentioned books and all of their documentaries available online to stream or purchase.
