“It Follows”

If you have’t seen “It Follows,” you would do well to watch it because there is a whole lot of very deep things going on and they are hidden and yet right in front of your face. It is also one of the best horror films I’ve ever seen.

Here there be spoilers.

“It Follows” didn’t do great at the box office and I fear that there will be no other films of this ilk. David Robert Mitchell directed this film and it’s an amazing piece of work.

There is another film that has at least one similar element. “The Sixth Sense” starring Bruce Willis has secrets that were embedded into the film. For instance, when one saw red something was going to happen, things like this.

Synopsis:

A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. (IMDb)

This one sentence is so inadequate to explain this film.

While watching “It Follows” I right away felt ‘off kilter.’ There was something not right with the film beside the fact that dead people wanted to kill the main characters.

With the feel of a zombie film and a slasher film for sure, there are homages to John Carpenter’s “Halloween,” also the “Nightmare on Elm Street movies.” If you’ve ever seen the original “Night of the Demons” there is a small homage to that.

There is so much going on I can’t remember it all, let alone report it here.

The longer synopsis is this:

A young woman has sex with her new boyfriend for the first time and he passes on a curse. This curse includes one dead person (at a time) following her, trying to kill her. It could be a stranger, or a dead person impersonating one of her loved ones. The only way to get rid of the curse is to pass it on to someone else. She would have to have sex with someone else and it would pass to them. As mentioned above, only one of the dead will try to kill her at a time, but as soon as she escapes one, another will start following her. They aren’t fast, they aren’t zombies, they aren’t even ghosts. I believe these dead people are caught up in a curse of their own.

Terra’s Opinion

Wow, just Wow! There is so much in this film and it is tempting to just spill it all here, but I won’t. I will, however, tell you to watch the film once and then again after you start seeing what is going on. Be observant, look at the photos on walls. Check out what people are wearing or not wearing. Have fun with this film, it’s the type you want to watch over and over because it’s going to show you something new every time.

In my final thoughts about this film, I have to thank Alondra Rogers-Clements, M.S.W. I had come to the same conclusion that many others had, the curse was an STD. However, Rogers-Clements believes that the film has a much different meaning.  Subjects like Date Rape and stalking are just a few of what she got out of this film and I believe she is correct.

Bottom line: This is a great film that someday we will look back on and say, “Wow, THIS film brought forth a new genre of excellent films.
